Spelljammer Campaign Notes

Here are my notes from the first full session of my new Spelljammer campaign. I'm running Spelljammer Academy as a lead-in to Light of Xaryxis

-Nate

Spelljammer Campaign Notes

Characters

Al—Crishymm, male thri-kreen barbarian

Aric—Illyan, male astral elf sorceror

Brent—Durgo Hawklyn, male human cleric of Chauntea

Geof—Globulus Splort, plasmoid fighter

Michael—Rixian, male water genasi druid

Orientation”—September 13th

The action opened with the heroes aboard the spelljammer ship Moonraider. An astral reaver slammed into the side of it, and the resulting impact killed off Captain Sardax. With her last breath she implored the heroes to hold the top deck at all costs. They acquitted themselves admirably, charging into battle and cutting down the attacking reavers with axe and sword cuts, arrows and an icy spell. Then another explosion rattled the ship—only to freeze in the middle of the action, and then be revealed as an illusion used for training purposes, one depicting the Battle of H'Catha. Boatswain Tarto commended them on their performance, and then gave them a list of duties to complete as their orientation at Spelljammer Academy.

From there they went to the reception and met Sor-Kur, the thri-kreen receptionist. She gave them their welcome kits, including uniforms, toiletry bags and gear vouchers. Next they headed for the dormitory, where an astral elf named Veena tried to take Rixian's bunk assignment. He stood his ground, Glob added an insult, and a fight ensued. With a flurry of punches, along with a couple of mind sliver spells from Illyan, the heroes convinced the elves to bunk elsewhere.

Next they attended a tour of a visiting spelljammer ship, a flying fish ship. During the tour, Rixian noticed a hobgoblin officer, Vashnik, meeting with a captain on another dock; Vashnik seemed to pay a bribe in exchange for a bottle of something. Rixian chose to sit on that knowledge for now.

On the assault training obstacle course, Crishymm ran out to an early lead, but then got into trouble. Glob had some trouble with the spinning wheel of maces, too. Crishymm was the first to complete the course. Illyan used magic to reach the top of the climbing pole, and the rest of the heroes finished the course as well.

Next, Crishymm and Glob visited Mister Blip, the autognome quartermaster, to requisition gear as part of the Spelljammer Corps. At the same time, Illyan, Durgo and Rixian reported to Saerthe Abizjn, who started training them on attuning to and operating spelljammer helms. During that exercise, Abizjn asked some probing questions, which the heroes answered to their satisfaction.

Finally, after completing their checklist of tasks, tBoatswain Tarto asked them to delivery a package to the quarters of Mirt the Merciless, the Academy Head. He was still sleeping, recovering a meeting with offworlders the night before. Mirt told them to open the package and leave it on the rug; eight neogi hatchlings erupted from it! With a flurry of spells and melee attacks, the heroes slew the neogi. Mirt rewarded them for their service. In the aftermath, they heard a worried Mister Blip mention that the attack had been a ruse to draw away security personnel, and that another theft had occurred...

Loot: Requisitioned gear for Crishymm and Glob; a 50-gp gold ingot for each character

Experience: Advance characters to level 2.

Trial by Fire”—September 27th

On the morning before their first (illusionary) spelljammer voyage, the heroes gathered in the refectory for breakfast. There they heard rumors that a pistol belonging to the cook, Winston Ryeback, had been stolen. They also met a fellow cadet, Miken Haverstance, who was worried that he wouldn't live up to his team's expectations. They managed to raise his spirits.

Reporting to the Simulations Deck, they were greeted by Boatswain Tarto and Saerthe Abizin, who briefed them about the mission—sailing into the asteroid belt to recover a logbook from a wrecked vessel. They put Durgo on the helm, with Illyan acting as captain and the other party members serving as shipmates. En route they ran into a school of electric space eels, but managed to avoid taking too much damage. Approaching the asteroid belt, they spotted the wreck and came at it from above. Globulus jumped overboard, with a rope tied around his waist, and retrieved the logbook.

Heading back to Toril, they found themselves ambushed by githyanki pirates aboard a squid ship! The two vessels traded artillery fire before the heroes made a ramming attack. They missed! Having drawn in close to the enemy, however, they decided to board them. Durgo gave Glob some healing, and then the plasmoid, with Crishymm, led the attack. At one point Crishymm found himself surrounded by enemies, but he held his own. Illyan contributed guiding bolts from the deck of the party's ship, and Durgo provided more healing. The heroes won the day.

Continuing their return trip, the heroes found Miken and his team adrift, having suffered from their own encounter with the electric space eels. Glob threw over a rope and pulled the two vessels aside each other, and then the heroes provided aid and evacuated the wounded.

Loot: Award of 100 gp for each character

Experience: Advance characters to level 3.

Realmspace Sortie!”—October 25th

The heroes awoke abruptly as Boatswain Tarto was shouting and throwing garbage cans; they dressed, packed their gear and ate a hasty breakfast before heading to the Skydock. The hadozee briefed them about their mission, heading to H'Catha to recover an adamantite asteroid, before boarding the hammerhead ship Flight Foundling and heading into orbit over Toril. There they made rendezvous with a derelict beholder tyrant ship, where they went aboard, bringing a good deal of gear and accompanied by Petty Officer Winston Ryeback (male giff cook), Miken Haverstance (male human adept), Krik'lit (female thri-kreen carpenter's mate) and Pfredd (male plasmoid).

Once aboard, they divided up the equipment; Ryeback and other other shipmates headed below to set up the galley, while the heroes devised a means of moving the spelljammer helm up to the command deck. As they did so, they triggered a spin cycle trap, and the ship began spinning wildly! They were knocked around a bit by that, but eventually Rixian struggled his way onto the helm and, with help from Durgo, gained control of the vessel.

Later the heroes heard noises from the cargo hold and headed below to investigate. There they found piles of debris, out of which three clockwork horrors attacked! This was a lengthy battle. Crishymm used his axes and Glob struck with his scimitars, and the horrors counterattacked with sawblade claws and bites. Durgo did a lot of healing, and eventually Rixian's thunderwave spells helped turn the tide of the battle. In the aftermath, the heroes found pieces of dismantled autognomes—along with a survivor named Wizpop—amid the debris. Working with Krik'lit's tools, Durgo figured out how to reassemble the autognome.

They had a short rest back up on the bridge, before Mike emerged from one of the tunnels with alarming news. The heroes headed below again, with Glob and Crishymm leading the way. There they found the newly created galley engulfed in flames, with a trio of magma mephits causing the chaos. Rixian used create water to help douse the flames, while the plasmoid and thri-kreen led the charge in melee. In spite of the mephits' fire breath and tendency to explode, the heroes won the day.

Loot: Two potions of healing issued to each character; five pearls worth 100 gp each from the debris; a spell scroll of rope trick.

Experience: Advance characters to level 4.

Behold H'Catha”—November 7th

Following the heroes' request for aid, Boatswain Tarto and Saerthe Abizin arrived aboard the hammerhead ship Flight Foundling. They sent Krik'lit and Miken Haverstance back to the Academy aboard that vessel, but they stayed aboard the Tyrant Ship with the heroes. The combined group reached H'Catha without incident; Saerthe kept the ship hovering above the shore of the Spindle, Tarto lowered a rope ladder, and the heroes ventured ashore.

There they found evidence of the meteorite impact, along with tracks leading into one of the caves in the Spindle. Glob spotted ahead, but the spectators saw him. They introduced themselves as Greelob and Orlob, and explained that they were vying to guard the meteorite, which a one-eyed ogre had dragged here, its lair. Glob convinced the two spectators to have a duel to settle the matter, and Orlob won it with a ray from one of his eyes. Crishymm snuck into position, and then he attacked it and Glob turned on Orlob. The heroes defeated those enemies, loaded the meteorite into their bag of holding and departed.

On the way back to Toril, they fell out of cruising speed due to an asteroid in their path. Qitru the githyanki appeared, riding a star lancer, and called for the release of Miken Haverstance. The heroes explained that Miken had been taken back to the Academy, but Qitru did not believe them and so attacked. The heroes defended themselves vigorously, and so Qitru had the star lancer turn invisible and they tried to flee. Rixian shapechanged into a mole and spotted them, but they still managed to escape to their waiting vessel. The rest of the return trip was uneventful; the heroes resumed ordinary duties, while the officers called for a briefing.

While the heroes worked on chores the next day aboard the Flight Foundling, an unknown vessel arrived and giff stormed from it aboard the hammerhead ship, demanding that they surrender it. The heroes refused, of course; Rixian responded with moonbeam, and Durgo used guiding bolts. Glob jumped into battle, too, and the giff were not successful with their grenades. Just after the giff fell, two githyanki warriors appeared, hauling Miken with them. The heroes defeated them, too, and Rixian healed Miken's injuries.

With that, the heroes completed their training at Spelljammer Academy, and were prepared to be sent away for new opportunities...

Loot: Two muskets, one or more grenades (determined randomly after the first one is used), and a magical item of each hero's choosing as a graduation present (+1 rod of the pact keeper, +1 shield or weapon, bag of holding or goggles of night).

Experience: Advance characters to level 5.

Astral Rain”—November 22nd

Having completed their training at Spelljammer Academy, the heroes ventured back out into the rest of Toril aboard the galleon Belligerence. There they had a chance to do some shopping and to inquire about possible crew positions aboard spelljammers; they met Captain Elaina Sartell. While visiting a local tavern, they felt the earth tremble, heard the thunderous eruptions, and rushed outside to see what was happening. There they saw strange crystalline vines rising up out of the ground. Captain Sartell urged them to flee.

Some of the smaller crystal vine-things were mobile, and six of them attacked! Illyan hit them with a fireball, and the rest of the party dispatched the others. There were more eruptions and more tremors, and the heroes saw a building collapse on a group of fleeing locals! There were more of the creatures—which they later identified as astral blights—that attacked those helpless people. The heroes rushed into battle, slaying the blights, and provided healing to the wounded. Crishymm flew into a rage and Rixian took the form of a powerful ape.

Arriving at the docks, the heroes found a local rogue, Traevus, leading a bunch of goons who were presenting the locals from boarding ships to flee the city. Combat quickly ensued, and the heroes made short work of these ne'er-do-wells. After that they boarded Captain Sartell's galleon, the Moondancer, along with as many of the locals as it could hold, and set sail. This was a spelljammer; it lifted off from the sea and soared into the sky.

Loot: None.

Attack of the Star Moth”—December 6th

Once the Moondancer had left Toril's atmosphere, Captain Sartell gave them a tour of the space galleon. She explained that she wanted to seek more information about these strange occurrences from an acquaintance on the Rock of Bral. They started to hear some grumbling among the refugees whom they'd taken aboard, questions about where they were headed, and when they'd be able to return; Illyan help calm their fears, and the others helped them settle in aboard the ship. The PCs also did some fishing to help supplement the provisions they were all sharing. They also identified six refugees who were competent sailors and recruited them as shipmates.

Before long, they spotted a star moth that was closing with them. Realizing that they couldn't outrun that vessel, Captain Sartell and the PCs decided to come about and engage. They handed out weapons to the shipmates, including a surprising number of hand axes from Crishymm, and showed the sailors how to throw grappling for closing the gap. The astral elves aboard the star moth—the Dark Star—seemed haughty at first, but soon changed their tune. Rixian opened the attack with an ice knife and Illyan added a chromatic orb. Glob slipped across and maneuvered into position to backstab, while Crishymm raged and charged into battle. Rixian cast shillelagh and joined the fray, while Illyan added magic missiles and another orb. Glob spilled one elf's guts with his scimitars.

After defeating the astral elf warriors, the PCs headed below decks and found the spelljammer, an astral elf star priest named Altura, on the ship's helm. Recongizing her predicament, she surrendered, and even explained the astral seeds that they had planted on Toril. The PCs locked her up and split their crew between the two vessels, and then continued on their way to the Rock of Bral. As they approached the asteroid cluster, they found a nautiloid ship lying in their path!

Loot: The star moth Dark Star?

Treacherous Salvage”—December 20th

The PCs boarded the nautiloid and began exploring. Psurlons attacked them! Crishymm charged into battle; Rixian hit them with a thunderwave, and then cast shillelagh. Illyan hit them with sacred flame, and Durgo provided healing. Crishymm pressed the attack and was reckless, killing one of them. They retaliated with psychic crush. Illyan took out another one with a chromatic orb, and Glob spilled the guts of another one with his scimitars. (He took a moment to taunt the dying psurlon: “You gonna clean that up?”) Rixian finished off the last one with an acid splash.

After that fight they continued exploring. The PCs found a number of beheaded mind flayers; with Wisdom (Medicine) checks they confirmed that a sword was used to decapitate them. Durgo climbed up to the bridge and found the ioun stone. They also discovered that the sphincter-door to the mess hall was sutured shut with ropes and hooks.

On the prison deck they found evidence of the battle that occurred on the ship, and then ran into the quaggoth. They caught it with a web spell, and then Rixian shapechanged into a giant spider to attack. Durgo blessed his comrades, and Crishymm surprised the others by casting a guiding bolt. Together they slew the quaggoth.

Loot: Ioun stone (reserve) with one casting of shield; 23 gp and 117 sp in loose change; a 50-gp bloodstone ring; a +1 breastplate that is embossed with tentacles.

Experience: Advance characters to level 6.

A Friend in Need”—January 3rd

(At the start of this session, we had a little business left to finish from “Treacherous Salvage.”)

The PCs finished exploring the derelict nautiloid, and concluded that the mess hall, with its sphincter-door sutured shut, was the last area to examine. As they approached, a human-sounding voice called out to them for help, so Crishymm slashed open the sutures and rushed in to help. He found a neh-thalggu waiting in ambush, which attacked with its claws and bite. In response, Crishymm and Glob opened up with axes and scimitars, while Durgo and Illyan hit it with a guiding bolt and a big magic missile. Rixian shapechanged into a cat to slip in behind it, and then whacked it with his shillelagh. The neh-thallgu tried to mind blast Durgo, but failed, so it became invisible and tried to escape. Glob chased after it, though, and managed to find it by extruding an appendage. Illyan toasted it with a fireball and the others, blessed by Durgo, managed to cut it down.

After that the PCs continued to the Rock of Bral. There they discharged the hadozee that had crewed the star moth Dark Star, but retained the sailors from Toril—Miriam, Beryl, Jebediah, Conrad, Beryl and Esmerelda. They also held on to Altura, the astral elf star priestess, as their prisoner. Glob completed the ritual to summon a space owl familiar, which he named Hootie. With Altura in tow, they headed to the Happy Beholder tavern, where they met Commodore Krux. After telling him their story, he agreed to accompany them back to their ship.

Outside the Happy Beholder, four astral elves confronted and attacked them! Durgo hit one with a guiding bolt, and Crishymm charged in with reckless axe attacks. Illyan hit one with a chormatic orb (acid), and Rixian conjured a flaming sphere. Crishymm cut down one, and Glob another. Durgo healed his comrades. Illyan finished the third with toll of the dead, and then Glob cut down the last one.

After loading supplies, they set sail with Krux for Topolah's tower. En route, they spotted an esthetic that was pursuing them!

Loot: None.

Living on the Edge”—January 17th

The reigar, traveling in an esthetic, closed with the party's ship. Rixian was on the helm at the time. The esthetic screamed at them, causing them considerable harm and disabling their helm for a few hours. Rixian healed himself, as did Durgo. Hastain the reigar boarded their ship using dimension door. Crishymm missed with a guiding bolt, as did Illyan with a chromatic orb. Hastain summoned their golem, which engaged with Crishymm. Rixian summoned lightning! Durgo hit with his guiding bolt, and Crishymm critically hit the golem. Illyan hit the reigar with a chromatic orb, and received a chromatic bolt in return. Durgo hit the reigar with another big guiding bolt and Hastain was laid low. Crishymm continued piling damage on the golem, and Illyan finished it with a magic missile. After a bit of discussion, the PCs jettisoned the unconscious reigar.

Left addressed, the lookouts spotted a pod of kindori; Rixian recalled that they are attracted to lights. Durgo cast a light spell to bring them closer, and then swam out into the air pocket in their midst. The cleric of Chauntea used healing magic to make them feel good, and was prepared to use sending to communicate them when the helm started working again. The PCs continued on their way.

Arriving at Topolah's tower, Rixian did a good job of bringing their star moth alongside the rickety docks. They made introductions, and Illyan made a strongly positive impression on Topolah. After giving a tour, she offered them the wildspace orrery in exchange for dealing with a predatory void scavver nicknamed Big Momma. The PCs agreed, and prepared to go hunting.

Living on the Edge”—January 17th

The PCs waited in the jolly boat for a short time before Big Momma attacked! Illyan hit her with a thundering chromatic orb. A couple of other spell efforts missed their mark before Glob hit the scavver with an arrow. Big Momma frightened them with her gaze! Illyan cast toll of the dead, and Rixian called lightning. Crishymm hit her with some javelins, too. Then Glob put an illusory bag over her head (and she threw a natural 1 on her save), causing the scavver much confusion. Taking advantage of that situation, Durgo attacked her with a spiritual weapon, and Illyan hit her with a chromatic orb and a fireball. Glob's arrow finally slew her. With that task accomplished, Topolah guided the party to a meeting with Grimzod Gargenhale, commodore of a fleet opposed to the Xaryxian Empire.

En route they saw evidence of a big battle; they found Gargenhale in command of a galleon in rough shape. Illyan was not so persuasive in talking to the vampirate, but Durgo spoke of behalf of Toril and was more convincing. Just as Gargenhale agreed to help the PCs, however, his crew mutinied!

The PCs gave chase in their star moth. After drawing alongside, they boarded the galleon. This was a big fight! Rixian became a wolf and leapt aboard the enemy vessel, while Illyan hit it with a couple of fireballs. Glob and Crishymm waded into battle, and Durgo helped, too. The PCs were able to take control of the galleon; in its brig they found Xedalli, an astral elf who—along with her twin brother Xeleth—are heirs to the Xaryxian throne!

Loot: Periapt of health, 2 potions of superior healing, oil of etherealness.

Experience: Advance characters to level 7.

Grave Alliance”—January 31st

Trust Issues”—February 28th

(The group voted not to play on February 14th due to it being Valentine's Day. We played this session remotely due to the weather.)

Xedalli introduced herself and told of her brother's betrayal (Xeleth, heir to the throne of the Xaryxian Empire). Commodore Krux told the rest of his story, too, how he'd been defeated in a battle with the Xaryxian Fleet. Krux and the PCs took some target practice with Krux's musket, but didn't have too much success with it. They did some astral fishing, and introduced Altura, their captive, too Xedalli.

Upon arrival in Doomspace, they used Topolah's wildspace orrery to find the planet Aarun. While Globulous took the helm, the other PCs formed the away team and ventured down to the surface. There they found Major Blastimoff in trouble, being chased by five aartuk warriors and an aartuk priest. While the warriors engaged Crishymm in melee—with little success—Rixian cast erupting earth to hinder the priest, and then Illyan hit him with a chromatic orb (acid). Durgo summoned a spiritual guardian that cut down the priest. Rixian hit one of the warriors with his shillelagh, and it hurt him pretty badly in return, but Durgo channeled divinity to heal him and then conjured a spiritual weapon (longsword) to aid in the battle. Illyan twinned toll of the dead to deal with two more of the warriors, while Crishymm pressed his attacks, and Commodore Krux even waded in with his longsword. The PCs and their allies won the day.

Then two bulettes erupted from the ground! Crishymm charged one of them, and Commodore Krux fired his musket at the other. Illyan missed with a chromatic orb, as did Durgo with a guiding bolt. Rixian shapechanged into a dire wolf, bit one, and dragged it to the ground (trip attack). Then Durgo and Illyan hit with new spell attacks, and the tide of battle was turned.

In the aftermath, Major Warwyck Blastimoff told them about Vocath the Mercane, and how he could be the key to building a coalition against the Xarixyan Empire.

Arena of Blood”—March 14th

Based on what they'd learned from Major Warwyck Blastimoff, the PCs headed for Vocath's moon. Upon arrival they surveyed the docking platforms and then moved in to dock at #7; the mercane's guards seemed alarmed by the arrival of a star moth, until they introduced themselves. They met with Vocath and quickly came down to business, agreeing to fight as gladiators in his arena.

When the two b'roghs appeared, Rixian shapechanged into a dire wolf and attacked one of them. Globulous used his illusion to put a box on one's head, to good effect. Rixian tripped his opponent, but fighting from the ground, it rended him pretty badly. Durgo provided some healing. Illyan's spell efforts were not so successful; he failed with toll of the dead twice. Rixian used shillelagh to pound on his foe, and Glob finished it with his scimitars. Crishymm contributed mightily, as well.

Realizing that there was a mirror of life trapping underneath Vocath's balcony, Illyan hit it with magic missiles! It shattered, releasing the rest of its monstrous contents. Those included a braxat, brown and gray scavvers, a spacy guppy and a megapede! Illyan gave Glob greater invisibility, allowing him to attack with relative freedom. The brown scavver swallowed Rixian, but Illyan slew it with a chromatic orb. Glob cut down the gray scavver, too. In a heroic effort, they also cut defeated the megapede.

That was when Prince Xeleth, riding on a dragon, crashed through the dome overhead and called for them to turn over Princess Xedalli!

Discord and Diplomacy”—March 28th

Upon his arrival, Crown Prince Xeleth made his demand: that the PCs and their allies turn over Princess Xedalli to his custody. They hesitated, contemplating violence, until both Vocath and Xedalli herself encouraged them to comply. Illyan helped talk them into cooperating, and Xedalli dropped her ring of shooting stars in the sand at his feet before letting herself be led away. After Xeleth departed, Rixian found the ring and Illyan started wearing it.

Then they began negotiating with the various factions who were present. The humans were friendly, but Durgo's speechifying didn't impress them too much. A gift of ten healing kits and his demonstration of how to use them, however, won them to the cause. Although the aaracockra were indifferent, Illyan won them over with his gift for persuasion. The thri-kreen were already friendly, and Crishymm took advantage of that fact by hosting a tremendous feast and telling tales of his prowess in battle. The aartuks were also indifferent, and insisted that the PCs prove themselves in combat. Rixian took up the challenge, wrestling their leader. At the start of the bout he shapechanged into a giant constrictor snake, and was given freedom of movement. Thus he won easily. Finally, Illyan convinced the indifferent Ssurans with his charisma and by promising to help repair the broken landing leg on their Spelljammer vessel.

Experience: Advance characters to Level 8.

Mind Flayer Over Matter”—April 11th

En route to the Rock of Bral for supplies before their voyage, the PCs encountered Dagaz the Githyanki. She challenged them, but then made an offer—loot and assistance, in exchange for aiding her with a mind flayer problem in Vermillionspace. There they encountered a flying fish ship that had seen better days; the crew aboard it told them to leave the area. They detected that something was awry, however, and opened the fight. Crishymm and Durgo started with guiding bolts and killed one of them. Illyan missed with his own such effort, but did not miss with a chromatic orb of thunder. Glob charged into battle with his scimitars, and the others helped him with the battle.

From there, the PCs ventured into an asteroid belt where the mind flayers was trying to open a portal for a horror from beyond this plane. The PCs slew the mind flayers and closed the gate for good.

Loot: 4 art objects (250 gp each); Manual of the Golem

Nightspider Dead Ahead”—April 25th

As the PCs emerged from Vermillionspace, they were ambushed by a nightspider! Their two ships traded some artillery fire; once they were close enough, Illyan went after the other ship's weapon crew with a fireball. Then Glob and Crishymm fired their ranged weapons and then stormed aboard, and finished off the artillerists. From there they engaged with the rest of the crew, making relatively quick work of the neogi. The umber hulks proved to be tougher foes, of course, and managed to confuse Crishymm and Glob. Even so, the other PCs were able to hold their own, and so they prevailed.

Space Invaders” and “Crowning Moment”—May 9th

During their brief stopover at the Rock of Bral, the PCs traded the Manual of the Golem and tentacle-covered breastplate +1 for items more useful to them, including a cloak of protection; a ring of protection; a pearl of power; a scimitar +1; and what Durgo picked. After that—and laying in provisions, ammunition and other supplies—they assembled their fleet and headed for the Astral Sea, bound for Xaryxisspace and a final confrontation!

Arriving in Xaryxisspace, they saw the Citadel and the astral elf fleet surrounding it. Since they were traveling aboard a star moth, the devised a plot to act as if they were being chased by the rest of the fleet that they'd assembled, and make a beeline for the citadel. Illyan used flag signals and a Persuasion of 28 to sell the deception! The other crew members added fake blood on the decks of the ship, burning oily rags, and more to complete the effect. When the Xaryxia tried to pull alongside them, they claimed to have many wounded who needed immediate aid (Illyan's Persuasion = 23).

Durgo was piloting, and managed to land the star moth in the garden of the Imperial Citadel. With some assistance from Commander Corelleth, they pushed their way into the Temple of Light. Glob became invisible, and trailed the others unnoticed. When High Priest Andavier asked if anyone wanted to defend Princess Xedalli against accusations of treason, Illyan stepped up to do so (and used Persuasion of 23). His words turned many in the crowd against Prince Xeleth, who then called for trial by combat to settle the matter. Princess Xedalli named the PCs as her champions, and Prince Xelleth called for the Zodar!

Experience: Advance characters to Level 9.

Crowning Moment”—June 5th

With the announcements made, the PCs entered battle with the Zodar. Glob and Crishymm both hit it with their swords and axes, respectively. It tore into them with its crushing fists, and then hit Rixian with a forced teleport. Rixian responded with an ice storm, and Illyan caught it with Bigby's hand. Durgo missed with his guiding bolts. Glob and Crishymm continued to press the attack with their blades, and Illyan added toll of the dead. Durgo and Rixian provided healing words for those two combatants, allowing them to keep up the battle, and the PCs defeated the Zodar!

With that, Princess Xedalli won her claim and was declared Empress. She asked for Illyan to return her ring, which he did. To reward her champions, she called for them to be arrested! At that point the voice of the Zodar spoke clearly, instructing the heroes that they could save their world by throwing the ring of shooting stars into the stream of light from Xaryxis.

The fight to save Toril was on! Moving quickluy, Crishymm grabbed the Empress in a four-armed grapple and started carrying her toward the stream of starlight in the astral font. The royal guards moved to intercept them, attacking the thri-kreem fiercely. Durgo hit her with hold person, at which point Glob extruded a tentacle and snatched the ring from her finger and headed for the font. Illyan caught up the guards in a web. Rixian bolstered Crishymm with a healing word and then joined the battle to guard the thri-kreen's flank. Durgon added a word of his own and channeled energy on him, too. Then Glob conjured a mage hand and used it to deliver the ring into the stream of light.

With that Xaryxis began to flare, sign that it would soon explode. The PCs raced back aboard their star moth ship, took to the sky, and fled the Citadel. After a journey through Astral Space they returned to Realmspace, where they found that the crystalline vines which had overrun Toril had shattered and collapsed. They had save the world!

Adam: Mr. Coburn, the barker

Al: Arnold, the strongman

Andrea: Madame Flaubert, the fortune teller

Breigh: Tommy “the Kid” Harrison, the acrobat

Brent: Bertram “Red” MacDill, the trickshooter—also known as “The Connecticut Cannon”

Nick: Standing Bear, the witch doctor

The heroes, a troupe of traveling entertainers, arrived via steamboat at The Crossing. There they encountered Sheriff Lawrence and his deputies, who were chasing an Indian brave, Red Hawk. They learned that Red Hawk was accused of stealing from the church, and prevented him from coming to any harm. From there they took rooms at the boarding house and then began exploring the town.

At the church, Madame Flaubert and Bertram met Reverend Edmond Bouchard, and she recognized that he wielded arcane power. Mr. Coburn went to talk to the sheriff, and arranged to stage two performances on that and the following night. At the saloon the heroes learned about the strange dreams that some of the townsfolk had been having, too. They staged their performance that evening, and then waited until the depth of night to continue their investigation.

Heading back to the church, they let themselves in the back door. They contemplated stealing the collection box, but decided better of it. There they also met Running Wolf, another brave who'd recently been converted to Christianity by Reverend Bouchard. He adopted the new religion, they learned, because of strange dreams that he'd been having, too.

From the church the heroes tracked Reverend Bouchard back to his home, where Tommy scouted the place and then Bertram forced entry. On the upper floor they encountered Sheriff Lawrence, and fought with him. The Reverend appeared behind them, too, and tried to cow them using the Fear power, but they resisted. The heroes defeated the villains, and in the basement found proof that the false preacher had been using Voodoo rituals to inflict nightmares on members of his congregation using items pilfered from them.

15 June 2019—“Truth or Consequences”

For this session, the players again selected—or continued playing—character archetypes from “The Traveling Show.”

Andrea: Madame Flaubert, the fortune teller

Charlotte: Inejkah (“Nej”), the acrobat

Karena: Jespin Sharpshot, the sharpshooter

Nick: Standing Bear, the witch doctor

While relaxing in The Crossing, the heroes were approached by a small raven. After determining that it could understand them, they let it lead them to a posted advertisement in the town square, one that promoted an exhibition of art and artifacts called “Civilization's Frontier.” They asked good questions, and then followed the raven out past the edge of town to where the Indian shaman Gray Buffalo was camped. The shaman led Standing Bear on a Spirit Walk, during which he learned that the bird is a vessel inhabited by the spirit of a young Indian brave named Small Raven, who wanted help taking back some native artifacts with arcane power that had been stolen and were now part of the exhibition. The heroes agreed to help.

Heading back to town, they met with Mr. Dexter, the barker who had come ahead of the traveling exhibition. Madame Flaubert talked up her group of entertainers; Nej showed off her acrobatics; Jespin shot a thrown coin out of the air; Standing Bear told a traditional story; and Madame Flaubert intrigued him with her mysticism. He offered them trial employment while the exhibition was at The Crossing, and they boarded the newly arriving steamboat, the River Maiden.

Once aboard the steamboat, Madame Flaubert checked out the cargo hold and confirmed that the artifacts weren't there. Back up on the main deck, in the space that was used for meals and as a lounge, the heroes encountered Miles Jameson, who was putting on the exhibition. Nej followed him when he headed back to his cabin, but he noticed her; she claimed to be an art student and they chatted. After he continued on his way, she climbed up the outside of the boat, and confirmed that his suite was #1 on the vessel's upper deck. She met back up with her associates and they made their plan.

Heading to the upper deck, Jespin picked the lock to Jameson's suite and the heroes pushed their way into it. They quickly took down Ezekiel Wainwright, Jameson's bodyguard. The philanthropist slipped out a window, however, taking the trunk of artifacts with him and calling for more guards. Jespin used some fancy shooting to disarm one guard and make Jameson drop the trunk; Nej knocked out another guard with some acrobatics and a swinging kick. Standing Bear counted coup twice during the fight. Grabbing the trunk, they escaped in a rowboat and delivered the goods to Gray Buffalo. He presented the coup stick to Standing Bear to show his appreciation.

Notes from the Manifested Destinies Campaign

We can file this one under "better late than never." I've finally typed up the notes from my campaign for The Sixth Gun that I ran during the 2018-19 school year, which I called "Manifested Destinies."

-Nate

Notes from the Manifested Destinies Campaign

Player—Character—Description

Al—Bobby Gallagher—Young gunslinger

Aric—Lucian Boxton—Former Confederate officer; bounty hunter

Chad—Milton Jackson Hughes—Old sawbones

Geof—Chao Yun “Charlie” Lee—Sometime Triad member

Michael—Clement Bonesteel—Former prospector (now deceased)

Michael—Sawyer Hawkins—Old Pony Express rider

28 August 2018—“Reversal of Fortune”

The heroes—travelers who'd not yet made each other's acquaintance—fought off a zombie attack on the steamboat River Maiden.

11 September 2018—“Ill-Gotten Gains”

Bobby recognized some of the zombies as the remains of men who once served under Arthur “Mad Dog” Madigan, a Confederate raider. The heroes recruited Willie, a roustabout from the River Maiden, to bring a boat and help them track the zombies. Along the river bank they found a pig carcass and other traces of the zombies. An alligator attacked, but they killed it.

Eventually the trail led to a tunnel in the riverbank, the entrance to a hidden cache. While the others were preparing to enter, Milton used the Burrow power to go inside it. In this way they avoided the collapsing floor and spikes trap. A swarm of rats attacked, and Clement gave them a taste of dynamite. The heroes found little of value in the cache, but continued to follow the zombies' trail further inland.

25 September 2018—“Ill-Gotten Gains”

Lucian found the trail again and they continued to follow it, leading to an old plantation with an overgrown yard and a dilapidated house. While Milton and Lucian took covering positions, Bobby and Charlie snuck around the back. Lee saw movement in an upstairs window before two zombies came storming up out of the cellar. Clement shot one and Charlie blasted the other. Rushing into the house, the heroes fought off more zombies, and then managed corner and kill the Voodoo practitioner who'd been creating the zombies.

From the cellar the heroes recovered some cash and other valuable stolen goods, including a Gatling gun with the name Clementine engraved on it.

9 October 2018—“Blood on the Snow”

Following the business on the river, the heroes were approached by Terrence Taylor, the newly appointed Indian Agent bound for Fort Arneson. He recruited them to escort him—along with a sizable amount of cash intended as annuity payments for the Native people there—to the fort. They set out with Milton driving the wagon, Taylor riding shotgun, Charlie in the back with Clementine, and Bobby and Lucian as outriders.

As they traveled they encountered another wagon, with a horse running out of control in the opposite direction. Bobby managed to calm it, and the heroes met Ellie and Sam Clayton, two children bundled in blankets in the back of the wagon. Their mother, who was driving the wagon, had fallen unconscious from exposure to the cold. The children explained that she'd hustled them away from the family's farm because “they were in danger,” but they didn't know what happened. The heroes' efforts kept the mother alive, but in no condition to tell them anything.

The heroes took the children and their slowly recovering mother back to the farm to investigate. There they fought off a pack of wolves that had gathered, and found evidence of an attack—perhaps by the native people. They finished the journey to Fort Arneson, delivered Agent Taylor and sold Clementine, and then took the children and their mother, Nora, back to a settlement on the river known as Smith's Crossing, where she might stay for the winter. Bobby gave Nora $50 to help her get back on her feet, too.

23 October 2018—“Buried But Not Dead”

While resting in Smith's Crossing, the heroes saw posters recruiting “Capable, discreet and hardy individuals to undertake a journey into the Southwest, for shares of the anticipated profits.” Asking around led them to Alexandra Flynn, a Pinkerton who is doing the recruiting. She staged a series of contests to test the interested parties, in which the heroes were victorious. Clement won the riding competition, while Lucian out-shot and out-fought the others. After agreeing to terms with her, purchasing supplies and hiring some laborers, the party set out.

Along the way, the heroes recognized the signs of a coming storm, and so sought high ground to avoid flash floods. While they were encamped, they shared some of their stories.

  • Clement headed west because he was in love with a woman named Cora Jeffries; her Pa wanted him to make his fortune before he could marry her.

  • Charlie came east because his father and that of his love interest, Darlene, ran rival businesses. Darlene's father sent thugs to discourage Charlie's interest, and Charlie “settled it with my sixgun.”

As they approached the old abandoned mission that was Flynn's destination, the heroes noticed native people watching them from a distance; Charlie approached and made a good impression on them and their leader, Fast Horse.

6 November 2018—“Buried But Not Dead”

The heroes ventured into the mission and found, inside the old church, a secret staircase leading downward. Milton used his Burrow power to find and avoid a rattlesnake and a trapped corridor at the bottom of the stairs. He was also able to circumvent a complicated puzzle mechanism and recover items from a hidden cache. The items included a stash of gold coins, an old black powder pistol, twelve blessed pistol cartridges—known as Apostles—and an elaborate scroll case containing a copy of the Clavicula Salmonis—the grimoire known as the Key of Solomon, believed to contains spells for summoning and even binding demons.

Outside the mission, Fast Horse and his people attacked the party, but the heroes defeated them handily. They set back out for Smith's Crossing, intending for Milton to try studying the scroll and see what he could learn from it.

20 November 2018—“Restless Spirits”

Milton was not able to read the scroll, so they gave it to Flynn for the promised price. Before departing, she gave them a Pinkerton's business card for a Galveston office.

Some time later, the heroes noticed that a raven seemed to be following them; Charlie shot his bow at the bird, but missed it. In the morning some of the heroes went to church, which was interrupted when Dr. and Mrs. Smith announced their departure for Fort Arneson. The heroes seized this opportunity for some breaking and entering. They had some difficulty wrangling the servant girl, Meghan, but Clement managed to cow her with a shotgun blast. They found the secret entrance to the basement and discovered there evidence of Mrs. Smith making poppets to control the locals—including some of the soldiers at Fort Arneson—and translating passages from the Clavicular Salmonis. Outside the house the noise of the shotgun blast had drawn a crowd, but Charlie handled them diplomatically.

Understandably suspicious, the heroes decided to follow the Smiths to Fort Arneson.

4 December 2018—“Hell to Pay”

En route to Fort Arneson, two more heroes shared their stories.

  • Bobby was a runaway indentured servant; he inherited his alcoholic father's indenture to a disreputable employer back east. He was enamored with dime novels, and so he decided to go pursue that kind of life.

  • Lucian told how his sister had been killed during the War, and he was traveling the country trying to find and kill the man who did it.

Along the way, the heroes notice the raven following them again; Lucian shot the bird on the wing and killed it.

The party reached Fort Arneson, where they reported a fire in Smith's Crossing, along with tales of locals suffering all manner of torment. Hearing this, Lt. Jeffreys and Dr. Smith agreed to accompany them back to town. While they were camped out along the way, Bobby let it slip that the heroes were suspicious; during the ensuing fight, the heroes killed Dr. Smith. They headed back for the fort but, cresting a hill, witnessed a huge explosion inside it.

18 December 2018—“Hell to Pay”

Arriving at the fort, the heroes were granted entrance when Lt. Jeffreys vouched for them. Inside they found the remains of a treaty meeting between the soldiers and representatives of various native tribes, along with collapsed ground that implied the existence of tunnels beneath the surface. Charlie, Bobby and Milton ventured into the tunnels. There they ran into three ghouls; Charlie killed one, but then was forced to flee another. Aided by Milton's use of the Deflection power, Bobby slew the other two.

Back up on the surface, Clement took cover and then tried to create a distraction by throwing a stick of dynamite behind the storehouse. It blew a hole in the stockade wall, however, and the native people who were attacking started to stream in through it. A huge running battle erupted. Lucian was on his horse, sniping with his rifle. A native person attacked Clement with a tomahawk and killed him. Rushing to him, Milton felt a strange throbbing in the soil; he confirmed that Clement could not be saved, and then ducked into the storehouse for cover—where he found the Gatling gun, Clemetine.

Lucian, meanwhile, made a charge for the officers' quarters, at which point Capt. Arneson tried to shoot him but failed. At the same time, Bobby and Charlie emerged from the tunnels. Mrs. Smith, in the officers' quarters, tried to chase them away with the Fear power, but failed. Bobby shot out the building's front window, and then Charlie ended Mrs. Smith with a double-barreled shotgun blast.

8 January 2019—“Hell to Pay”

Lucian and Bobby combined to shoot down Capt. Arneson; Milton, Sawyer and Charlie—in a flurry of gunfire—helped cut down the attacking native people. A couple of soldiers managed to close the gate, stemming the tide of the attack. In the aftermath, the heroes gathered evidence of a fiendish plot to detonate explosives as part of a ritualistic sacrifice; Sawyer and Charlie helped Lt. Jeffreys negotiate a truce with the native people, with Running Fox acting as the translator.

While investigating the pentagram-shaped tunnels, Charlie fell into the pit at their center!

22 January 2019—“Beyond the Veil”

The other party members ventured into the pit to rescue Charlie. They faced off against a constrictor snake in an underground lake, giant spiders in a web-strewn cavern filled with natural columns, a wolf raptor during the crossing of a rope bridge, and then a band of skinwalkers who were trying to use Charlie for a sacrifice. Beyond the skinwalkers' lair, they saw more tunnels leading to other, unknown destinations...

19 February 2019—“South of the Border”

While helping to guard the Pit, the heroes met Marshall Llewellyn and told him their story. They agreed to undertake a search for Alexandra Flynn, accepting $500 apiece up front and future assistance from the Black Stars. Bobby paid a visit to Mrs. Clayton in Smith's Crossing, and then the party set sail on the River Maiden heading south for Galveston. There Charlie paid a visit to the local Pinkerton's office, where he learned that Flynn had gone to the small Mexcian town Akumal, on the Yucatan Peninsula. For that reason the party hired Captain Danielson, and his bark the Intrepid, to take them there. Before departing, the heroes deposited money in the National Bank of Galveston.

En route the vessel encountered a storm, and the main mast collapsed, threatening to capsize the ship! Charlie and Bobby ran out on deck with axes, trying to cut it free, but struggled with the waves rolling over the deck. In the end, Lucian shot away the remaining timber with his pistols!

At Akumal, the heroes went to the cantina and met Jorge, a local who had worked with Flynn. They hired Pablo, an interpreter, who helped them talk down some heavies who showed up at the cantina looking to collect money from Jorge.

5 March 2019—“South of the Border”

With information from Jorge, the heroes set out into the Yucatan jungle to track Flynn. Along the way they ran into a poisonous snake, which bit Hawkins; Lucian blasted it with his rifle. During the trek, Hawkins shared some of his story.

  • He was a scout with Jim “Hot Lead” Crenshaw, leading groups of pioneers. Crenshaw sent him and a party of settlers into Indian territory, but they ran into hostile natives. All of the settlers were killed, but Hawkins survived by agreeing to a trial by combat against a native warrior.

After more hiking the next day, the party reached a Mayan pyramid. They climbed to the top and then ventured inside it, being stealthy as they did so. Charlie saw and killed the panther, and then the party fought with the resident priest, Shadow Jaguar, and defeated him handily. They found Flynn, who was his prisoner, and then questioned and killed her.

26 March 2019—“The Train”

Having concluded their assignment for the Black Stars, the heroes decided to head east to help Bobby with a personal matter—freeing his sister, Molly, from her indenture. To that end they traveled by steamboat to Pittsburgh, and headed by train from there for New York. During the trip a party of Pinkertons tried to bushwhack them, but the heroes managed to fight their way out of it.

In New York City they found an establishment run by Boss Tilden, the Sign of the Fortunate; there they roughed up a bunch of Tilden's thugs, freed Molly and a few other indentured servants, and then headed out of town.

9 April 2019—“Unfettered”

Bobby left Molly with $900 to start a stable and livery in Smith's Crossing. While there, they received word that Marshal Llewellyn wanted them back at Fort Arneson, so they headed there. When a squad of terracotta warriors erupted from the Rift, the heroes were ready and defeated them.

23 April 2019—“Unfettered”

Following the attack, the heroes ventured into the Rift. They struggled some with the underground lake, but nobody drowned. In the columned chamber they heard the bloodhounds led by the Knights of Solomon, were not surprised, and thus defeated them. At the chasm, Lucian sniped the waiting knight; Sawyer rushed out to face the terracotta warriors, and benefitted from supporting fire. In the skinwalkers' lair, they met Kalfu and learned the tale of Marinette of the Dry Arms—Milton could see the ghosts of the children heading toward the Crossroads, and so they headed there.

7 May 2019—“Unfettered”

The heroes surveyed the situation at the manor house before using the Hand of Glory to approach it, dropping a stick of dynamite and then entering. Milton slew the revenant that occupied the place from a comfortable chair. After some exploring they found the hidden key, wound and set the clock, and found the bottle inside it. That's when wolves attacked, followed by Samuel Clayton—now a werewolf—who called out Bobby. Clayton hurt Charlie, but was badly wounded by Lucian before Bobby slew him.

That was when the heroes heard the sound of marching feet approaching.

21 May 2019—“Unfettered”

The heroes took up positions on the upper level of the house and prepared to defend it. Sawyer noticed that a patch of darkness seemed to be moving, so they opened fire on it. At that the Knights sent their terracotta warriors to charge their house and push their way inside it. A huge battle ensued, at the end of which the heroes were victorious.

11 June 2019—“The Knights of Solomon”

The heroes staged a counterattack against the Knights of Solomon, raiding their castle via the Winding Way. Bobby shot and killed the High Inquisitor.

Return to Freeport Campaign Notes

This post should be the first of many with notes from my current Pathfinder campaign, Return to Freeport.

Return to Freeport Campaign Notes

The PCs:
  • Al—Leonard Melachion, human male inquisitor
  • Aric—Kenton Fuso, human male fighter
  • Brent—Birgir, human male fighter
  • Geof—Templeton, human male rogue
  • Michael—Hector Nicolai, half-elf male sorcerer
  • Todd—Abinacki of Ibstock, human male cleric of the Sea God

Session 1—Curse of the Brine Witch—20 August 2019
(We took the first part of this session for creating characters.)

While the PCs were passing through the Fool's Market, Gamey Rind reacted to Hector, spewing information about “the biting eye,” “the crone's red claw,” “the black blood of the poisoned earth,” and “too many missing and not enough dead.” When the passersby started to crowd the PCs, Templeton (more subtly) and Birgir (less so) managed to back them down.

Shortly thereafter they met Little Nell, who led them to Scurvytown for a meeting with Lady Jane at the Torchlight Academy. They heard her story, mostly via Nell, and decided to help. The PCs set up watches to keep an eye on Lady Jane, while Templeton patrolled the street outside the Academy.

During the night Hector had a nightmare about a ship crewed by damned souls, disembodied arms reaching out at him from the fog, and a fleet of ships flying Mazin flags. Kenton woke him up from it. While on watch, Birgir fell asleep, but Leonard was awake when a ghostly hand appeared and struck Lady Jane with some kind of curse. It caused her considerable harm, but Leonard raised the alarm and Hector hit it with a magic missile to dispel it. The PCs decided to continue their investigation in the morning.

Session 2—Curse of the Brine Witch—27 August 2019
The next morning the PCs started investigating. Hector took the black powder to the Wizards' Guild, but they couldn't identify it. Abinack went to the Temple of Procan, but had similar results. Templeton did some asking around the Eastern District and Scurvytown, and met some people who'd suffered various afflictions. There was also talk of strange disappearances. Eventually the party ran into some pirates who were attacking a woman they said was cursed; the PCs defeated them and saved her. At another time they found a man who was being attacked by a sand-blighted swarm of rats, which they managed to slay.

From there they picked up a trail of black sand and followed it to the Chambers Asylum, which had been boarded up. The PCs forced open the door and entered. They were ambushed by a trio of azhar buccaneers, but turned the tide against them. After some more exploring they found three more buccaneers, led by First Mate Nejhira; they outfought the pirates and captured her.

Session 3—Curse of the Brine Witch—3 September 2019
Continuing their exploration of the Chambers Asylum, the PCs set off a trap in the kitchen, and then found a krenshar in the pantry. Its howl brought more of the creatures, and the PCs fought them off with a brave stand in the common room. Abinack stood over the uncounscious First Mate Nejhira to ensure that she was unharmed. After confirming that the ground-floor dormitories were unoccupied, they headed upstairs.

Templeton tried to sneak up on the cultists, but failed; Birgir attempted to vault their barricade, but crashed into it instead. Even so, Hector put to of the cultists to sleep, and the rest of the part slew the other one. From there they met and talked with Clement Moore, and decide to bind him with shackles and bring him with them. They also found three more cultists in the treatment rooms and defeated them, too.

Finding the stairway that led to the underground level, they headed downward. After examining the high-security cells, Kenton found the secret door to the hidden laboratory. Zabreen the Magnificent, protected by a shield spell and moving on the ceiling because he could spider climb, caused the party considerable harm with his burning hands. Abinack kept the PCs on their feet by channeling positive energy, however, and using a combination of ranged attacks, spells, and creative melee efforts (such as rolling a large barrel under their foe, or having one character boost another—they won the day.

Session 4—Curse of the Brine Witch—10 September 2019
Following their business in the Chambers Asylum, the PCs kept First Mate Nejhira with them; they decided to let Clement Moore go after questioning him. The next morning they headed to the Docks to visit the Scalded Man, which they found occupied by a half dozen crew members. After some consideration, they decided to leave Nejhira there, with the possibility of doing business in the future.

Heading back into town, they were ambushed by Eyebiter, Constance and a pair of snipers with crossbows; they won the fight using weapons, spells and pursuit up to the rooftops to outflank their foes. They were also attacked by a doru, which they defeated. Arriving at Kafe Ilkin, they learned more about the divs and what they might be doing in Freeport.

Session 5—Curse of the Brine Witch—17 September 2019
After their visit to Kafe Ilkin, the PCs were taunted by another doru, who told them Little Nell was in danger. They went to check on her, and arrived just as she was stricken down by the Brine Witch. Another doru taunted them again, this time mentioning Arzu from Cafe Ilkin. Rushing back there, they discovered that the azhar alchemist was missing, but did manage to find a potion of see invisibility. Using that they tracked yet another doru back to the Brine Witch's lair, which they stormed, and managed to slay their foe.

Session 6—The Abyssinial Chain—24 September 2019
During their downtime the PCs have been staying at the Torchlight Academy; they have taken to calling themselves the Torchlight Crew. In the interim, Lady Jane, Little Nell and Arzu have recovered.

When approached by Maldemer Drum, all but Kenton agreed to be interviewed. Hector told about his encounter with Gamey Rind; Templeton mentioned the black sand and the Chambers Asylum; others told of the Scalded Man and its crew, the assassins and Arzu; tracking the Brine Witch to the abandoned house, and the final battle. Somebody boasted, “As long as we're around, Freeport is safe.” Templeton might have said something about freedom, justice and honor.

The next day, after the story ran, Abigayle Wynt found them at the Academy, and Abinack asked for the story. After hearing her tale, the PCs agreed to look for her brother at her asking price. They headed to Krom's throat on her tip, where Templeton spread around some gold, said the right things, and learned that Jakob had also frequented the Chickenscratch. The PCs went there, posing as spectators for the cockfights, cased the joint, and then attacked—and defeated—the guards in the hope of gaining access to the place's back room.

Session 7—The Abyssinial Chain—1 October 2019
The PCs continued their rampage through the Chickenscratch, defeating the cockerels and their handlers. They ransacked the storage area and entered the bunkroom, where Kenzing fled to the office to unleash the cockatrice. The PCs defeated them with melee attacks, arrows and spells.
Having heard cries from the arena to summon the Redblades, the PCs set fire to some of the rooms and escaped through an exit that Kenton had made. They evaded pursuit through the streets and alleyways following Templeton's lead, and Birgir carried out the unconscious Kenzing.

During some downtime at the Torchlight Academy, the PCs read through Sackerson's papers and questioned Kenzing. They decided then to split the party; some asked questions around the Docks, which cast suspicion on the Mollycoddles, while others posted falsified messages saying that Kenzing had taken over running the Cockspurs and wished to deliver another batch of slaves. They were directed via other posters to go to the Docks. There, leading a strange parade of humanity recruited to act the part of prisoners, they were attacked by some mermaids, and managed to defeat all but one of them.

Session 8—The Abyssinial Chain—8 October 2019
The PCs wove a trinket into the hair of an unconscious mermaid and let her free; Abinack used locate object to find her out in the harbor. Then they plunged into the water on the offensive. Leonard was grappled by one of the crabs but liberated himself. Abinack was grappled, too, but the others killed it before it could eat him. The Mollycoddles came streaming out of the sunken ship to defend their lair. Hector weakened some of them with a color spray, and the other PCs used lots of movements, flanking attacks and a good deal of healing to win the fray. After defeating the mermaids, the PCs rescued their prisoners and learned the sewer exit into which other captives had been delivered.

Session 9—The Abyssinial Chain—15 October 2019
After some preparations, the PCs headed into the sewers beneath Freeport. At one intersection they were attacked by an otyugh, but Kenton shot it in the mouth with an arrow before Birgir finished it off with a swing of his axe. Later a cloaked dropped from the ceiling, enveloped Birgir, and panicked all but Kenton with its moan; the archer slew it with a pair of arrows. At another intersection Mr. Licorice and his choker children ambushed the party. Leonard, Abinack and Birgir were all grappled, but the prior liberated himself while the latter two had their foes killed. Approaching the Hotel Recherche, they tripped the alarm, and thus fought a ready Brazajer, two thugs, and the amorous choker and mermaid, Panterri and Gondalyn—but the PCs won the day.

Session 10—The Abyssinial Chain—22 October 2019
Moving up from the hotel's cistern and basement, the PCs explored the ground floor. Two of the chairs around a long table were actually mimics, and attacked them! Leonard became stuck to one, but again liberated himself. The other PCs managed to dispatch the shapeshifters. On the next level Templeton was stealthy and began exploring, but Abinack was not so quiet and alerted Godmother Gold. Thinking quickly, Templeton used a dagger throw to knock some smoldering embers onto the ground, hoping to smoke the ratfolk out of the counting room. Kenton and Hector began sniping into through the barred window, before while Birgir and Leonard positioned themselves outside the door. The PCs once again were victorious. One floor higher, they ran afoul of hobgoblins, chain gangers, an alchemist and a leopard, the latter of which pounced on and badly wounded Leonard—but Abinack healed him. Again the PCs won the day, and now there is only one more floor left in the hotel.

Session 11—The Abyssinial Chain/Storming the Razor Caves—29 October 2019
Heading into the top floor of the hotel, the PCs heard Miss Vee's offer to work for her; they played along a little bit in order to approach her, but then rejected it out of hand and defeated her and her chain ganger bodyguards in combat. In the aftermath they learned about her efforts to recruit more gangs as part of the Abyssinial Chain, and that she has an influential patron in Freeport known only as G.

They also found evidence that Jakob Wynt and other slaves had been taken to a place called Hangnail, which some investigation revealed to be an island to the south of Freeport. They tracked down a besotted captain, Flynx, paid some of his debts and convinced him to lead them to Hangnail. Together they steered the ship through a tricky passage in an area of dark water known as Midnight's Ichor, fighting off some attacking wraiths along the way, and reached their destination.

Session 12—Storming the Razor Caves—5 November 2019
Arriving at Hangnail, the PCs were confronted by Klinx Thickskull; they decided to give up her estranged father, Captain Flynx. Heading into town, they ran into a group of Ameer toughs who were coming out of the tavern, but the PCs dispatched them. They then met some of the surviving locals, who called them into tavern and told of the situation on the island—including the facts that the slavers had taken their chattel deeper into the caves of the island, and that the slaving business had recently been disrupted. The PCs managed to access the old warehouse, where they found a stash of jugs that contained alchemist's fire. From there they attacked the old meeting hall, facing and defeating more of the slavers.

Session 13—Storming the Razor Caves—12 November 2019
Moving on from the Congress of Captains meeting hall, the PCs dispatched the guards by the door that leads back into the Razor Caves and then broke it open. They fought off the guards from the barracks, managing to hold against the villains' efforts to attack from both sides. Some of the Ameer warriors in the secret harbor noticed the party's incursion, however, and sounded the alarm. The PCs defeated a slave master and more warriors, and began spreading out into the rest of the compound. They now find themselves in the thick of things, with numerous enemies still surrounding them.

Session 14—Storming the Razor Caves/The Freebooter's City—19 November 2019

Moving further into the compound, the PCs dispatched another Ameer warrior and a priest. Bosun Gelgooth, a winged ape-like creature, attacked from aboard the Eth Abaddon, which was riding at anchor in the secret harbor. There was much climbing across the line being used for moving cargo to the ship, and Hector swam across to it in an impressively aquatic manner. Kenton sniped with his bow while others engaged, and they defeated the bosun.

Yusynaat, the pairaka div, used a summoned swarm to weaken the PCs, and managed to charm Birgir to turn him against the others. She tried to dimension door aboard the Eth Abaddon and escape, but they caught up to and slew her. After exploring the facility and finding what they could, the PCs set sail from Hangnail aboard their newly acquired ship. In Midnight's Ichor they overtook the Precocious Imp, which was drifting, with only Captain Flynx left aboard. When Black Jules attacked, they struck a deal with him, and then continued on toward Freeport.

Session 15—The Freebooter's City—10 December 2019
Upon arrival in Freeport, the PCs were met by a ship of the city's navy and told to receiver boarders, including soldiers, Councilor Nathan Grymes and High Wizard Tarmon. The latter two decided to confiscate the Eth Abaddon temporarily for inspection, but did pay the PCs 200 gp each and invite them to that evening's council meeting. Abigayle Wynt also paid them the promised 1000 gp each.

After some shopping, the PCs went to the meeting, where they argued for rallying the Freeport Navy against the Mazin threat, but the councilors voted against doing so. Jacob Lydon met them at a tavern afterward, however, and proposed recruiting a flotilla of pirates, and the PCs agreed to do so. They found Katspur Zee at the Irate Pirate tavern and convinced her to join; after that they found Mean Wallace at Krom's Throat, beat him and his orc crew in a fight, and thus won his cooperation, too.

Session 16—The Freebooter's City—7 January 2020
Continuing their recruiting, the PCs asked around town and learned about Edward Cooper's interest in the late Dolly Jasmine, a victim of the Brine Witch's curse; Lady Jane told them about Dolly's business with Bryleth Hayes, a cartographer at the Freeport Institute. For some compensation, he agreed to draw a copy of the map that had been tattooed on Dolly, and they used it to win Cooper to the cause.

Next they trekked across A'Val to Cabbage Crack—being attacked by and defeating a pair of shambling mounds along the way—and met Christopher Bailey at his farmhouse. By appealing to his honor, they convinced him to join as well. Back in Freeport, they learned that Sabiha Carrington was seeking a letter of marque, and they had Jacob Lydon write one for her.

Finally, following up on rumors that Sarinda Rogers was still alive and dwelling in the sewers beneath the city, they ventured underground—fighting off a blacking pudding as they did so—found Rogers, heard her story, and agreed to help her find the amulet eternal.

Session 17—The Freebooter's City—14 January 2020
Abinack used a locate object spell to find the resting place of the amulet eternal; the PCs drank potions of water breathing and took the plunge. Entering the coral dungeon, they handily dispatched the dire prawns—and saved the carcasses for later use. The giant moray eels gave them a tougher time, but they still won the day—and again saved the carcasses. In their battle against the mermedusa and her sahuagin servants, none succumbed to her petrifying gaze, and they were victorious. With the amulet returned to her, Sarinda Rogers agreed to join their fleet for one last voyage.
Once all were assembled, multiple captains threw in their names to lead the flotilla, including Hector! For that reason, Maldemer Drum arranged a competition. The PCs won the deck-swabbing contest when Abinack called upon the Sea God to create water for doing so. He won the climbing race, too, by using his dimension step ability. Finally, Birgir won the drinking contest, and Hector was named Commodore of the fleet.

Session 18—A Storm of Sails—21 January 2020
After she blew obsidian sand in Hector's face, the PCs chased the mysterious red-robed woman; Templeton caught her, but she dissipated before telling them anything more. Hector has a vision, however, in which he met Ad Avish. The party hired seven artillerists to operate the ship's ballistas, and then they set sail. En route to Hangnail they fought off a slithering sargasso, a wing of kapoacinths, and a gang of wights led by a spectre. Just before reaching Hangnail, they spied two ships in the distance that tried to turn about and make a run for it...

Session 19—A Storm of Sails—28 January 2020
The PCs captured another elemental baghlah, a scout for the Mazini fleet; they fought their way through a deck full of enemies and a stinking cloud to do so. They gave Christopher Bailey command of it. The other one was sunk by the other ships in their flotilla.

Sessions 20 and 21—A Storm of Sails and Traitor's End—4 and 11 February 2020
Knowing that the Mazini fleet is approaching, the PCs decided to let those ships reach the main Hangnail harbor, and then use their own flotilla to pin them into place; they would then sneak around from the secret harbor and attack from behind. The Mazini spotted them, however, and pressed for a direct engagement. It was a hard-fought battle, and Ad Avish proved particularly tough. The PCs one the day, but Abinac was killed in the fight. He was reincarnated as a goblin.

Among Ad Avish's possessions the PCs found evidence revealing the identity of the traitor, G; they returned to Freeport as the Drac's Fall festival was beginning. After some investigation around town, they headed to the Helkerna shipyard to confront Captain Cecelia Mawkins and her pirates, whom they defeated. They learned that she'd been making deliveries to Drusilla's Drafts, an alchemy shop in the Merchant District.

Session 22—Traitor's End—18 February 2020
Upon arriving at Drusilla's Draughts, the PCs conversed with her for a bit before pushing their way into the backroom, where they found the secret entrance to a stairway leading below. At the bottom of the stairs she tried to lead them into the pit trap, but she failed. The chemical golem caused the party some trouble, as did the Ophidian alchemists and Zesshessn, but the PCs won the day.

Session 23—Traitor's End—25 February 2020
From the Ophidian alchemists the PCs learned about the production of ebon blight, a poision made from the black sand, and Grymes's plot to poison the rum intended for the Drac's Fall celebrations. For that reason they visited the Dirty Molasses distillery, only to find that their rum had been moved to Warehouse 44 for distribution. Arriving there, Leonard used a dimensional hop to bypass the front door, taking Birgir with him; they unbarred the front doors, found the blood stains and tracked them into the office. They found the bodies of the slain supervisor and guard, then headed further inward. Eventually the faced off against three rogues from the Vultures gang and defeated them, before facing and defeating Grim Caldwell, his phantom, and two more rogues.

After that they visited the Three Spears distillery, too, where they ran into the bugbear brawler Bruiser Beegore and more Vultures thugs. The PCs won that first battle and survived a cone of cold trap before encountering and defeating Mercy Wintoris and more of the Vultures thugs. From Mercy they took a note, which led them to research the poetry of Opal Shelby.

Session 24—Traitor's End—3 March 2020
The PCs read the poem; Hector recognized he clue in it, and they set out for Grimarch Alley. Following the secret directions, they navigated its labyrinthine course. Upon reaching the quicksand, Abinack moved himself, Birgir and Hector over it, while Templeton and Leonard made running leaps. That was when the Guardian struck, trying to push them back into the mirk. He proved a challenging foe, but the party's numbers carried them to victory. They made relatively short work of the giant squid at the base of the Spire, and then were harassed by the nasu divs while making the climb over numerous derelict ships. (Kenton was forced to wield a spear. A spear!)

At the top they found the div-touched Nathan Grymes, who pushed the PCs to their limits; only through a combination of spells, healing, knife slashes, rapier stabs, axe blows and arrow strikes were they able to win the day.
